RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL

Travel with purpose. Leave a Positive Footprint.

Responsible tourism is part of how we design the journey — from community relationships to conservation and practical environmental choices.

OUR COMMITMENT

Travel should give something back.

We aim to support communities, protect the environments we travel through and create cultural experiences that respect people rather than turning them into attractions.

01Our objectives+

Our objective is to help less-fortunate communities access basic necessities such as education, food and health care, while supporting environmental re-shaping through tree planting and related conservation activities. We believe in the power of unity and the potential of people supporting each other to build better lives.

02Vision & core values+

Our vision is to connect long-term volunteers with worthwhile community projects supported through responsible tourism.

  • Social needs
  • Educational needs
  • Environmental conservation and sustainability
03Our commitment to communities+

We strive to help less-fortunate people realize their potential by supporting practical opportunities, awareness and access to resources. Our approach includes giving young people a positive perspective, encouraging education and increasing awareness of the challenges faced by vulnerable communities.

04Projects: education, environment & water+

Our planned and supported projects include education initiatives for girls and less-fortunate groups, environmental conservation such as tree planting and clean-up activities, and water-related projects including boreholes. Project implementation is monitored on site and is intended to remain independent of political and religious interests.

05How funds and donations are handled+

We aim to handle contributions carefully and transparently, directing support toward agreed projects. We work with private donors, corporate donors and project sponsors, including in-kind contributions. Travellers interested in helping can discuss a specific project or structured donation with the Cajanus team before their trip.

06Volunteering with purpose+

Volunteering can be combined with a Tanzania safari, Kilimanjaro trek or Zanzibar stay. People with professional skills—such as teaching, health care or engineering—can discuss where their skills may be useful. Volunteers should work through locally appropriate projects and respect community priorities rather than arriving with assumptions about what is needed.

07Small actions during your safari+

Even a short stay can support responsible initiatives. Travellers may choose structured community support, environmental clean-ups, tree planting or other activities arranged through the operator. The focus is on practical help that respects local leadership and does not turn vulnerable people into tourist attractions.

08Home visits & cultural exchange+

Where appropriate and arranged with hosts, home visits and home stays can provide a genuine cultural exchange. Visitors should follow host guidance, ask permission before photographs and remember that ordinary family life is not a performance. Comfortable, respectful interaction is more valuable than rushing through a checklist of activities.

09School and community support+

Education support can include teaching materials, books, uniforms, school improvements, classroom construction and volunteer assistance. Any contribution should be coordinated with the relevant project so that it answers an identified need and can be used effectively by the community.

010Responsible travel tips+
  • Respect local customs, traditions and community boundaries.
  • Ask before photographing people, homes or ceremonies.
  • Choose community experiences that explain how local hosts participate and benefit.
  • Support conservation and avoid littering or disturbing wildlife.
  • Minimize unnecessary waste and choose practical eco-conscious options where available.
  • Do not make direct promises or gifts to children; use structured community channels instead.
